Restoration of muscle, tendon, and bone health is essential for successful physical rehabilitation following injury. High intensity, heavy weight resistance exercise is traditionally the best method for increasing muscle strength, endurance, and size, but some people may be unable to safely complete this type of training without pain or re-injury.

Blood flow restriction (BFR) resistance training uses a medically certified device designed to temporarily slow down blood flow to the arms or legs during low intensity, light weight resistance exercise. Research has demonstrated that this type of exercise may cause responses in the body that are similar to those experienced following high intensity, heavy weight resistance exercise, and may be used to effectively and safely reestablish muscle strength and size following some injuries.

Some of the conditions that have benefited the most from BFR include post-operative weakness, knee osteoarthritis, and shoulder pain.

Personalized blood flow restriction is safe to perform on the majority of patients. At the Sanford Fieldhouse, we use the Personalize Tourniquet System, manufactured by Delfi Medical Innovations, Inc, a world leader in tourniquet technology and safety. This device is specifically designed to safely regulate and control tourniquet pressure during the application of PBFR.

ASTYM is a therapy approach that addresses problems such as scarring, fibrosis, and degeneration that occur in soft tissues. These problems may develop as the result of trauma, surgery, or overuse. ASTYM is effective for new injuries as well as chronic, nagging conditions. ASTYM treatment uses instruments along the surface of the skin to locate these problem areas and start the body’s healing process. As the body heals, exercise and activity help guide the healing which allows you to return to activities without pain and limitation. The success of ASTYM is documented for a wide variety of diagnoses and many times it helps patients where other treatments have failed.

ASTYM treatment is used in settings ranging from therapy clinics to hospitals to industrial rehabilitation. This proven treatment improves countless lives every day.

The Supplemental Rehab program is unique to Sanford POWER Physical Therapy, offering a distinct advantage to patients receiving care at our location.

This program offers an individual an opportunity to work on specific physical therapy exercises and conditioning independently on days when therapy is not scheduled in an environment the patient is familiar with.

This approach allows physical therapists to concentrate on skilled intervention and progression during therapy sessions. By increasing the opportunity for patients to perform the exercise program, it will increase their independence and potentially mean fewer physical therapy visits and less cost to the patient in the long run. The Supplemental Rehab program maximizes use Sanford POWER and its resources.
