CONCUSSION-RETURN TO PLAY PROGRAM
The Concussion-Return to Play (C-RTP) program offered through Sanford POWER is an athlete-focused approach to safely return concussed athletes back to their sport of choice. The program consists of at least four visits to a Sanford POWER Center. Athletes in this program are carefully supervised and evaluated by sports medicine staff trained in concussion management and evaluation to determine readiness to return to full sport participation.
Before entering the C-RTP program at Sanford, athletes must be evaluated and cleared by their physician or certified athletic trainer (ATC) to begin graded exercise to assess recovery from a concussion. Once in the program, athletes slowly progress through a stepwise protocol of increasing intensity exercises and sport-specific movements.
Athletes successfully completing the C-RTP program are more ready and have more confidence to return to their sport than athletes who jump right back in to play. Our program gradually immerses the athlete back into his or her sport while being closely monitored, providing the most optimal opportunity for a healthy return and reducing risks of returning to play too early.
